TO BECOME A WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR YOU MUST:
A. Turn 16 years of age by the last day of class
B. Pre-register for a pre-requisite swim test held at Valley Pool
- Pick a date and call the Aquatics Office at 473-4330 Ext. 3025
- Sunday, February 5th at 12:30 p.m.
- Saturday, February 11th at 4:30 p.m.
- Sunday, February 12th at 12:30 p.m.
- Sunday, February 12th at 4:30 p.m.
- Saturday, February 18th at 4:30 p.m.
- Sunday, February 19th at 12:30 p.m.
- Saturday, February 25th at 4:30 p.m.
- Sunday, February 26th at 12:30 p.m.
C. Pass a pre-requisite swim test
1. Required strokes include; front crawl, back crawl, breastroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and butterfly.
2. Head first entry from the deck.
D. Sign up for the Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Class
1.Spring Session = Saturdays - 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at Valley Pool: March 3rd – May 19th - No class April 7th - Click here to complete and print a registration form.
2. Make a check payable to COMMISIONER OF FINANCE
i. City Residents - $25.00
ii. Non-City Residents - $75.00
3. Mail or hand deliver your registration form and payment to: Syracuse Parks & Recreation, 412 Spencer Street, Syracuse, NY 13204 Attn: Lifeguard Registration.
4. ON THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS you must bring a check for $100.00 made payable to COMMISSIONER OF FINANCE with Red Cross on the memo line for your textbook and required materials.
5. Training includes a minimum of 8 hours outside, practical teaching at department sites. Weekend mornings and weekday evening opportunities available for practical teaching.
