
What is Zoning?
Zoning is the set of land use regulations that apply to each property within the City of Syracuse. For each of the City's 30 zoning districts, there are regulations specifying allowable uses and activities, as well as controls on the location of buildings, fences, parking arrangements, accessory structures, signs, communication towers and antennas and other site features.
What is the Zoning Office?
The Zoning Office provides staff to the Syracuse Planning Commission and the Syracuse Board of Zoning Appeals. The staff offers assistance to various governmental agencies as well as the public. The City Planning Commission, Common Council (the legislative body), Board of Appeals, Landmark Preservation Board, and Zoning Administrator make zoning decisions.

How is property zoned?
Zoning districts in Syracuse are established for various classes of use: Residential, Office, Local Business, Commercial and Industrial. Planned districts are set forth for various institutional and commercial uses. In addition, historically and architecturally significant sites are included in Preservation Districts and Protected Sites.
