The Department of Parks, Recreation, and Youth Programs serves thousands of city youth each year with a variety of recreational and educational activity options during the after-school hours. Without question, these programs are greatly enhanced through the efforts of those in the community willing to donate time, energy, expertise, and resources. Volunteers with Parks and Rec come in all forms there are many opportunities that currently exist, and many more that, perhaps, we haven't yet thought of.

Whether one contributes to weekly activities or a one-time special event, volunteers play a pivotal role in the success of our program. Please consider spending some time with local youth in the near future! For more information, please call the Main Office at 473-4330, or contact the center director at the site nearest you!

Popular Volunteer Activities:

Tutoring
Most community centers offer homework help and tutoring during the after school program, typically between the hours of 3pm and 5pm. When the homework load is not too heavy, the time may be spent participating in fun educational games and activities. Best spots for Tutoring/Homework help: Ed Smith Elementary, Kirk Park, Wilson Park, Southwest Community Center

Basketball Leagues
Three centers offer basketball leagues for young people: McChesney, Northeast, and Southwest Community Centers. Games and practices for the winter leagues will be on Thursday and Friday nights, and Saturdays beginning in December. Leagues are ALWAYS looking for good coaches, referees, and scorekeepers

Specialty Classes/Programs
Skilled in music, the arts, fitness classes, maybe a nontraditional sport??? We are thrilled to have individuals or groups come into our buildings to teach a skill that might not otherwise be taught. We will always work with volunteer instructors to schedule class times, provide necessary materials, promote, etc. What a great opportunity to share a passion!
