  • City Parks understands the importance of regular physical activity for improving the health and well being of all of us!  New guidelines presented by the federal government indicate that by accumulating 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physcial activity each week, we can substantially reduce the risk for a host of chronic diseases.  To help achieve that goal, the Parks Department offers the following opportunities...   

    FITNESS INSTRUCTORS-Join our Team!  Help to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle by leading fitness classes in our parks and recreation centers... classes may be offered for youth, seniors, and adults! Send a short e-mail indicating your interest in applying, along with your experience and certifications.  

    Adult Fitness

    City Parks make fitness enjoyable and accessible with classes in our
    neighborhood parks…Class may be indoor or outdoor, based on weather. Exercises
    designed to improve strength and balance. No fancy equipment needed! 
    Section I:  Thornden Park (near Carriage House): 
    Session I: April 14 – June12, 2014;  Monday & Thursdays from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. 
    Session II: July 7 – August21, 2014;  Monday & Thursdays from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

    ZUMBA in the Square
    Free Exercise class at Clinton Square on Wednesdays during the lunch hour (WEATHER PERMITTING). High-energy music will keep the participants going during this half-hour program. The classes are offered FREE OF CHARGE as a collaborative effort of the City of Syracuse Parks Dept., Metro Fitness and THRIVE magazine. No registration necessary! Wednesdays, 12:15pm - 12:45pm.      Looking for a great low-impact exercise option? Maybe training for that triathalon? City Parks offers exclusive Lap/Training Swim hours at several pools
    Location: Valley Pool and Southwest Community Center Pool.  Click on location for pool schedule
    AGE: No age restriction 
    FEE: $3 or 1 coupon per entry. Entire pool available for lap swimming only.To qualify for an exemption from any fees charged for pool use, proof of exemption must be provided upon  EACH ENTRY  to the pool. If proof of exemption is not provided, a fee will be charged or access to the pool denied.

    Senior Fitness

    Syracuse Parks and Recreation Senior Centers are active each morning with a variety of classes and programs designed with health in mind. Check below for a schedule of free senior fitness classes.  Call the center for more information:

     ZUMBA GOLD... at the Magnarelli Center. a lower-intensity Zumba class geared toward active seniors!
     Schedule:  Mondays and Wednesdays, 9:30am-10:30am
     Fee:  $35 per session.  New 8-week sessions offered throughout the year. Check schedule below

    Youth Fitness

    FIT KIDS Program
     FREE After School Fitness Program returns this Spring
    Kids Need 60 minutes a day!  After School Fit Kids Program will help youth achieve the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity, and burn energy in a fun, safe, non-intimidating environment, with certified fitness instructors.  6-week Sessions: Begins Week of March 17th!  Join any time!

    MONDAY MILE LOOPS ...part of the  MONDAY MILE  and MOVE IT MONDAY Campaign!

    Two City Parks serve as start/end points for  MONDAY MILE Routes , and three additional city parks are marked with dedicated recreation lanes within the Park boundaries...for walking, jogging, or bicycling. The Monday Mile Routes and lanes provide a convenient way to track your mileage! Visit a park today, and enjoy the benefits of outdoor fitness!

     Schiller Park neighborhood:  Loop begins along sidewalk near tennis courts
     Barry Park neighborhood:   Loop begins near clubhouse

    X-C SKI at SUNNYCREST PARK - CLOSED for the Season

    Did you know that Sunnycrest Park is home to more than 2.5 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails?  When enough snow blankets the park, the trails bring skiers along a loop that includes Sunnycrest golf course and some wooded areas.  Great exercise for the entire family! Trails are maintained by the City of Syracuse Parks Department. Trails start at the Sunnycrest Ski Lodge (Hickok Ave entrance). Parking is available at the Ski Lodge and Ice Rink. Skiing is available December to March, snow conditions permitting. Snowshoeing is also encouraged! For more information or to verify the Lodge is open please call (315) 463.4398 (Ski Lodge).

    Trail Hours: Trails open 7 days a week dawn to dusk, weather and conditions permitting
