  • City Parks understands the importance of regular physical activity for improving the health and well being of all of us! Guidelines presented by the Centers for Disease Control and other experts indicate that by accumulating 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week, we can substantially reduce the risk for a host of chronic diseases. And remember...outdoor recreation in the Winter can also be great fun! To help achieve that goal, City Parks make fitness enjoyable throughout the year and offers the following opportunities.  Scroll down for terrific opportunities for Adults, Seniors, Youth and Families.

    FIT KIDS Out-Of-School Time Fitness Program...  Kids Need 60 minutes a day!  Fit Kids Programs will help youth achieve the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity during after school programming, and burn energy in a fun, safe, non-intimidating environment.  Sessions are led by experienced leaders or certified fitness instructors.  Some programs are open to adult family members as well!  Registration Required: To register for one or more of the free sessions, or for more information E-mail: .  Fall, 2018 Fit Kids After School Sessions are below:

    •   FITNESS CLASSES...join certified instructors from Fight for Hearts for these sessions that may include fun, active games, strength building exercises and more! Learn proper technique while getting fit!

    •    ZUMBA DANCE...join certified Zumba instructors for this fun, high energy dance class!  Adult family members welcome to join in!!

    •  COOKING TOGETHER FOR FAMILY MEALS  ...  Join Cornell Cooperative Extension for this award winning program that brings kids and family members together to prepare healthy, mouth-watering dishes!     •   SOCCER FOR SUCCESS...  a free after school program developed and supported by the US Soccer Foundation that is designed to introduce youth to the sport of soccer, while providing them and their families with the tools to make healthy lifestyle decisions!  Program sessions help children improve physical health, increase knowledge of healthy lifestyles, and help improve self esteem and behavior.  Program meets 3 times per week during the school year.     WELLNESS WEDNESDAYS with Metro Fitness!: Wellness Wednesdays, the free outdoor fitness program, returns each summer to downtown's Clinton Square. Certified instructors from Metro Fitness, based in downtown Syracuse, offer classes on Wednesdays...     No cost to join... simply drop in each Wednesday!

    • Unified Yoga:   Unified Yoga is an inclusive recreation program for people for all abilities and backgrounds, to come together and share in the physical and mind-body benefits of yoga! Designed for beginners, but all levels of practitioners can take this class.  Unified Yoga uses poses that are carefully selected to provide optimum functional application to individuals with low motor tone and difficulty with coordination.  Focus is on improving movement across midline, core stability, flexibility and relaxation!  Class is led by Rebecca Alexander, DPT, 200-RY.  Thank you for joining us this Summer!  Check back for future classes! 

     MONDAY MILES: Part of the MONDAY MILE and HEALTHY MONDAY Campaign! Two City Parks serve as start/end points for MONDAY MILE Routes , and four City Parks are marked with Monday Mile routes completely within the Park boundaries...Walk, run, or wheel, as the designated routes provide a convenient way to track your mileage! Visit a park today, and enjoy the benefits of outdoor fitness!     Monday Miles in the City Parks:

    •   Burnet Park: Begin at Parking area near the Playground. Include Golf course extension for 1 full Mile.
    •  Thornden Park : Single Loop - Begin in Parking Area near Pool
    •  Upper Onondaga Park : Single Loop- Begin across from Parking area near tennis courts.
    •  Schiller Park neighborhood: Loop begins along sidewalk near tennis courts Barry Park neighborhood: Loop begins near fieldhouse
    •  Sunnycrest Park: Loop begins at Golf Clubhouse. 

    SYRATHON ROAD RACE SERIES:  Stay active through running! Tour City parks and neighborhoods on foot, and accumulate marathon mileage (26.2), by choosing from up to 7 road races and 3 Fun Runs held through the year in the City of Syracuse. Check back for information on the 2019 Series!

     AQUATIC EXERCISE CLASSES: Don't miss this low impact workout that is sure to improve your strength, flexibility and endurance.  Looking for a great low-impact exercise option? Maybe training for that triathalon? City Parks offers exclusive Lap/Training Swim hours Location:  FEE: $3 or 1 coupon per entry. Entire pool available for lap swimming only.To qualify for an exemption from any fees charged for pool use, proof of exemption must be provided upon EACH ENTRY to the pool. If proof of exemption is not provided, a fee will be charged or access to the pool denied. COUPON BOOK: $55 for 20 tickets or $125 for 50 tickets. Booklets are available for purchase at the Parks Main Office (412 Spencer Street, 13204).


    FIT FOR THE NEXT 50! Syracuse Parks and Recreation Senior Centers are active each morning with a variety of classes and programs designed with health in mind.     WINTER RECREATION... when the snow flies and the temperatures dip, be sure to embrace the season and take advantage of these terrific opportunities to stay active, outdoors, in the City of Syracuse!

    • ICE SKATING: Visit any of our three Ice Rinks, including the outdoor rink in Clinton Square, for a wonderful, family-friendly option for Winter recreation. Check the links for directions, rates, and open skate times: Clinton Square, Sunnycrest Rink, Meachem Rink

    •   Cross Country Ski and Snow Shoe at Sunnycrest Park: Did you know that Sunnycrest Park is home to more than 2.5 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails? When enough snow blankets the park, the trails bring skiers along a loop that includes Sunnycrest golf course and some wooded areas. The Park is also terrific for exploration on Snow Shoes!  Great exercise for the entire family! When conditions permit, trails are maintained by the City of Syracuse Parks Department and begin at the Sunnycrest Park Ski Lodge/Clubhouse (Hickok Ave entrance). Parking is available at the Ski Lodge and Ice Rink. Skiing is available December to March, snow conditions permitting. Snowshoeing is also encouraged.     • Current conditions:  We have snow! Trails are groomed at Sunnycrest and the Lodges at both Sunnycrest and Burnet Park are open this weekend! 10am-4pm.
