
Historic Properties List
The Historic Properties List Update contains a list identifying historic properties within the City of Syracuse, which is filed with the City Clerk's Office Pursuant to the City of Syracuse Zoning Ordinance Part C, Section VII, Article 8.
The list is a comprehensive update to previous list. This list is updated frequently, therefore it should not be considered inclusive. Anyone requesting the most current description and interpretation should contact the City of Syracuse Zoning Administration Office, Room 211 in City Hall Commons. Historic Properties List Key
Architecturally Significant: properties that have been identified by the City of Syracuse as historically or architecturally significant through the course of completing various historic resource surveys or similar evaluations.
National Register of Historic Places: Established by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Register of Historic Places is the official list of historic properties that have been recognized as significant in American history, architecture, archeology, engineering, or culture. There are five categories of historic properties listed on the National Register. They are:
- Buildings: include homes, churches, barns, railroad stations, theaters, schools, and factories
- Sites: range from designed landscapes, such as parks and cemeteries, to archeological sites
- Structures: include bridges, fire towers, roadways, and ships
- Objects: are often artistic in nature and can include outdoor sculpture, monuments and fountains
- Districts: groupings of properties such as residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, and industrial complexes.
Eligible: properties evaluated by the State Historic Preservation Office that meet one or more criteria for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, but have not been listed. For more information go to www.nysparks.state.ny.us .
City of Syracuse National Register Districts: Armory Square, Berkeley Park, Comstock Tract, Hanover Square, Hawley Green, Montgomery Street/Columbus Circle, North Salina Street, South Salina Street, Strathmore, Walnut Park.
Local Protected Sites: a parcel of land together with a building or structure thereon which meets one or more criteria set forth in the City of Syracuse Zoning Rules and Regulations Part C, Section VII, Article V, and is designated as a Protected Site by amendment to the zoning ordinance. These properties have been affirmed and passed into law by the Common Council to be significant historic or cultural assets to the City of Syracuse. For more information click here .
