    The Syracuse Fire Department protects a 25-square-mile area with a population of 150,000 that grows significantly during daytime hours. This department provides fire protection for four major hospitals, several large office buildings, Interstates 81 and 690, as well as Syracuse University and the Carrier Dome.

    In addition to fire protection, the Syracuse Fire Department provides:


    • Emergency Medical Services


    • Extrication


    • Hazardous Materials Protection


    • High Angle Rescue


    • Confined Space Rescue


    • Training for other paid departments

    Currently 390 firefighters staff the department and answer over 20,000 alarms a year of which 100 are major fires.

    The Syracuse Fire Department holds an ISO class 1 rating, the only department in New York State to do so. There are approximately 30 departments nationwide that have a Class 1 rating.

    September 11 Tribute
    9-11 Firefighter 2 Minutes of Silence
    In addition to the City's "17 Minutes of Silence" at Fayette Firefighters Memorial Park at 08:30 and the Sheridan Park Association's "We Remember" at Station 17 at 17:30, a new tribute is being planned for September 11. From 07:30 until 21:00, Syracuse Fire Department members will depict the above images "Live" in Lipe Art Park, West Fayette Street near South Geddes Street. A sole SFD member will depict the image in 30 minute blocks. At the end of 30 minutes they will be relieved by another SFD member. Ted Ackerman (Station 1) is leading the effort.
