The Syracuse Fire Department protects a 25-square-mile area with a
population of 145,000 that grows significantly during daytime hours.
This department provides fire protection for four major hospitals, many downtown office buildings, Hancock International Airport, Interstates 81 and 690, as well as
Syracuse University and the Carrier Dome.
In addition to fire protection, the Syracuse Fire Department provides:
• Emergency Medical Services
• Extrication
• Hazardous Materials Protection
• High Angle Rescue
• Confined Space Rescue
Currently 390 firefighters staff the department and answer over 23,000 alarms a year of which 100 are major fires.
The Syracuse Fire Department holds an ISO class 1 rating, the only
department in New York State to do so. There are approximately 30
departments nationwide that have a Class 1 rating.
The 73rd annual Collins Block Service was held on Friday, February 3rd, 2012 at Firefighters Memorial Park. While this is the anniversary of the Collins Block tragedy, the service is in remembrance of all Syracuse Fire Department members who have made the ultimate sacrifice protecting the citizens of Syracuse.
