    The New Westside Story

    Lots to Do!

    The primary commercial corridor and major thoroughfare in the Far Westside neighborhood is West Genesee Street. Small pizza shops, taverns, barbershops, butcher shops, gift shops and floral shops are found throughout this area.

    The Mundy Branch County Library is located on Geddes Street, and is well-maintained and frequently used by local residents.

    Schools

    The Westside is home to many schools that serve the needs of a growing and diverse population.

    Public Schools:
    Delaware Elementary, Blodgett Elementary, Porter Elementary, Frazer Elementary School, Seymour Elementary School, Shea Middle School, Fowler High School. Seymour and Blodgett both have bi-lingual programs to serve the needs of the Latino community

    Public Schools:
    Sacred Heart, St. Lucy’s.

    Service Agencies

    The Near Westside is a diverse community with many agencies operating within the area to serve the needs of the many different populations. These agencies include the Spanish Action League, Huntington Family Centers, Vincent House, and the Boys and Girls Club. The Native American Service Agency sponsors a lunch program for elder Native Americans in the area.

    Parks

    The Westside of the City of Syracuse is blessed with an abundance of open and green spaces: Burnet Park, Faldo Park, Lewis Park, Skiddy Park, Ward Bakery Site, Pass Arboretum, and Stone Throwers Park. Burnet Park is located on the Far Westside and is also home to the Onondaga County Zoo. Burnet Park has a fifty-meter pool, two softball diamonds, two tennis courts, a basketball court and a newly renovated playground. It also has a nine-hole, par 3 golf course, open daily from 7 a.m. to dusk, May 1 through October 15, weather permitting.

    Skiddy Park, located on the Near Westside, was recently upgraded into a state-of-the-art baseball field through a grant from Major League Baseball’s Baseball Tomorrow Fund and is home to the Y.E.O.P. (Youth Enrichment Outreach Program) Baseball League.
